Jujube (Unabi)
Zizyphus mauritiana
Family Rhamnaceae. Ziziphus, or unabi (jujube) or Chinese date, is the name given to this shrub or tree with a spreading crown.
Often cultivated in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa and the Americas. Unabi — long-lived, it can reach an age of 300 years.
Ziziphus is characterized by early fruiting (in the second to third year) and consistently high yields.
Ziziphus does not grow very quickly. By the 4th year the plant reaches a height of 1 m, by the 10th year – 2 m.
The fruits are oval, pear-shaped or spherical, covered with a shiny reddish-brown skin; the flesh is whitish-greenish.
They are rich in potassium, magnesium, pectins and vitamins. Fruit size ranges from that of a chicken egg to that of a rosehip berry. The fruits have a pleasant sweet taste. Fruits are harvested unripe, as soon as they begin to lose their green color.
