Zantedeschia

Zentedeschia

Back to catalogue
Family Araceae. Native to South Africa. About 6 species of tuberous perennial herbs of the genus Zantedeschia occur in the wild. We know it by the simpler name — calla.

Zantedeschia aethiopica - Zentedeschia aethiopica - a large bushy plant with erect stems. Leaves on long petioles up to 1 m, cordate-peltate in shape, about 30-45 cm long and 15-25 cm wide, green in color. During flowering it produces several long flower stalks. The inflorescence is a spadix, which is always shorter than the spathe, and in some cultivars doubled. The spathe is light green or yellow-green, 15-25 cm long. Flowering occurs from January to June; after flowering yellow berries about 1 cm in diameter form. Many cultivars for outdoor and greenhouse cultivation have been bred from this species. Growing callas as houseplants is very difficult, since you must recreate conditions similar to their native habitat — South Africa — which requires a lot of sun and heat.

Zantedeschia albomaculata - Zentedeschia albomaculata - a large bushy plant with erect stems. Leaves on long petioles up to 1 m, lanceolate-arrowhead in shape, about 30-40 cm long, green on the upper side with small white spots. During flowering it produces several long flower stalks. The inflorescence is a spadix with a light-yellow or white spathe, having a purple coloration at the base, up to 10 cm long and about 5 cm wide.
