Vuylstekeara
Vuylstekeara
Family Orchidaceae. Native to South and Central America. Vuylstekeara belongs to the Odontoglossum group or to intergeneric hybrids obtained by crossing the genera: Miltonia x Cochlioida x Odontoglossum. This plant received its hard-to-pronounce name in honor of its breeder — a Flemish gardener who created it in the 19th century. The aim of breeding – to obtain a beautiful flower for cool rooms.
The most common hybrid is Vuylstekeara Cambria - Vuylstekeara Cambria – dark green, long, slightly drooping leaves grow from the pseudobulbs. Flowers are raspberry-colored, with a large entire lip of delicate pink with raspberry speckles. Flower size about 7-10 cm, several on an inflorescence about 40 cm long.
Temperature: Unlike most other orchids, this species does not like excessively high temperatures. In summer ensure the room is constantly ventilated, and in winter provide a temperature of 14-15°C. Minimum 12°C. For good flowering it needs a short rest period and a night temperature drop of 2-3°C.
Light: Vuylstekeara is light-loving, but in summer needs good shading from direct sunlight. The best place is an east or north window not shaded by trees outside. Do not place this orchid near a southern or eastern window, even under a sheer curtain - it will be too hot for the flowers.
Watering: Generous during active growth in spring and summer; the substrate should remain slightly moist. In winter water more moderately, allowing the substrate to dry a little between waterings. Use only soft, settled water for watering.
