Vriesea

Vriesea

Back to catalogue
Family Bromeliaceae. Native to Central and South America, the Antilles. In the wild there are about 250 species. Vriesea with gray leaves are more undemanding - they tolerate fluctuations of temperature and air humidity more easily than species with green leaves. At the same time they require a brighter location.

Vriesea splendens (splendid or shining Vriesea) - an epiphytic or terrestrial plant with a wide funnel-shaped rosette of broad-linear leaves. Leaves with an upward-curving margin, pointed at the tip, 50-70 cm long, dark green in color, with transverse dark stripes. A spike-like inflorescence on a long scape about 40-50 cm long. The bracts on the scape are closely appressed to each other, yellow, red on top. Flowering in May - July.

Vriesea carinata (keeled Vriesea) - an epiphytic or terrestrial plant, significantly smaller than the previous species. A wide funnel-shaped rosette of broad-linear leaves, about 15-30 cm long. Leaves light green, without stripes. A spike-like inflorescence on a thin erect or drooping scape. Inflorescence wide, about 5 cm long. The bracts are not closely appressed to each other, red, green on top. Flowering in November - December.
