Family Vitaceae. Distributed in Moldova, Crimea, the Caucasus, Central Asia, as well as in Central and Southern Europe and northern Iran.

Deciduous liana up to 20 m long, when lacking support it sprawls along the ground. Bark on older trunks peels off in strips; annual shoots sometimes slightly ribbed, two-year-old shoots smooth. Leaves rounded-ovate up to 9 cm, almost entire or shallowly 3–5-lobed, with a broad sinus at the base. Flowers yellow-green, fragrant, small, in paniculate inflorescences. Fruits are black, globose berries with a bluish waxy bloom.

It is drought- and cold-tolerant and is not affected by pests and diseases.
