Occurs from Southern Europe to Western Asia. A climbing clematis reaching up to 4 m in height. Tolerates lime. They are common in moist shrublands and floodplain forests, where they weave a network around various trees. Less often found on rocky screes and walls.

A vine up to 4 m tall. There is a huge number of cultivars obtained by crossing with forms and cultivars of other groups. These are shrubby climbers 3-4 m long. The flowers are open or slightly nodding, composed of 5-6 sepals; pink, red and velvety purple tones predominate in the coloration; they form on shoots of the current year, begin to flower in May, and bloom until the end of September.
