Three-colour violet

Viola Tricolor

Back to catalogue

Family Violaceae. Common names: pansies, bratiki, merry eyes, earth-flower, three-colour violet. Parts used: herb. Official (pharmaceutical) name: herb of Viola tricolor - Violae tricoloris herba (formerly: Herba Violae tricoloris).

Botanical description. This is an annual plant reaching 20–30 cm in height. Several subspecies are known. Leaves are oblong or ovate-cordate, toothed at the margin. At the base of the leaves there are comparatively large lyrate stipules. Flowers, as in garden pansies, are very variable in colour: blue, yellow, purple or mottled. I cannot agree with the opinion that the form with bluish-purple flowers is more effective. Flowers from May to August. Usually found in fields, dry meadows and in gardens.
