Flowers for the garden
Veronica Schmidt
Veronica schmidtiana
Family Scrophulariaceae. Grows in the Far East and in Japan.
A perennial low-growing plant 10-25 cm tall with ovate or oblong-lanceolate long-petioled leaves. Lower leaves (sometimes the upper ones as well) are scallopingly incised, slightly cordate at the base. Leaves are gray-blue, pubescent, rough to the touch. Some of the leaves overwinter under the snow. Inflorescences are usually terminal (they can also be axillary). Flowers are blue, about 15 mm in diameter. The corolla has a short tube and a limb that exceeds the tube. Blooms in late May for 3-4 weeks. This small ornamental plant is suitable for cultivation in rock gardens.
