Family Caprifoliaceae. Occurs in the Atlantic coastal regions of North America. On hillsides and forest edges, clearings and riverbanks on various soils together with other deciduous species.
A small deciduous tree up to 5 m tall or a large shrub, with sturdy horizontally spreading branches and bare shoots. In Moscow 20-year-old plants reach 2 m in height, with a crown diameter of 1.3 m. Leaves broadly elliptical to ovate, 3-8 cm long, with an acute or obtuse apex, a rounded base and a finely serrate margin. Flowers pure white, 0.6 cm in diameter, in corymb-like inflorescences up to 10 cm across. Fruits oval or rounded, up to 1.2 cm, blue-black with a glaucous bloom, edible.
An ornamental, hardy plant, valuable for landscaping. In cultivation since 1727. Used in plantings for various purposes.
