Uvaria

Back to catalogue
Family Annonaceae. Origin: Southeast Asia, Malaysia, the islands of Java, Sumatra and Borneo, the Philippines, New Guinea and occasionally found in New Zealand. All species of Uvaria are small trees or shrubs; some climb on supports with their clinging, twining shoots.

Most Uvaria species have much in common; they prefer humid jungles where they can reach impressive sizes. On the continental part of Southeast Asia, Uvaria species occur in evergreen forests or along riverbanks at elevations from 200 to 1100 meters above sea level.

In indoor cultivation, Uvaria lurida and Uvaria rufa are grown.

A small tropical evergreen tree. Leaves large, leathery, bright green. Flowers small, yellowish-brown with 6 petals, which open in the leaf axils. Fruits 2-4 cm in diameter, bright yellow, orange or red, with a firm rough skin, clustered in small groups.

This is a rather rare species of the family Annonaceae. It can be cultivated as a greenhouse plant or as a container-grown specimen. Plants grown from seed are capable of fruiting in their 3rd to 4th year.
