Family: Celastraceae. Native to: the coniferous and mixed forests of Japan, the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China.

An ornamental flowering climber up to 10 m high. Annual growth 2 - 4 m. Leaves elliptic, with an elongated curved tip, green above, bluish beneath (up to 18 cm long and 12 cm wide). Buds in the form of spines, curved upwards. The plant is especially decorative during flowering: numerous small (up to 5 mm in diameter) greenish-white flowers are gathered in panicle-like inflorescences, reaching 50 cm in length and 20 cm in width. Flowering period: from the first half of July to mid-August. In winter the three-winged is notable for the bright bronze bark of the annual shoots

At 12 years the height reaches up to 2.8 m, crown diameter 150 cm, shoots twine around supports. Vegetation period from late April–early May to the end of September. Growth rate moderate. Flowers and fruits from 6 years. Flowers in mid-August, about 2 weeks. Fruits ripen in September, not every year. Winter hardiness high (sometimes partially freezes).
