Flowers for the garden
Tipularia
Tipularia
Family: orchids. Derived from the Latin name of the genus of mosquito — Tipula L.; the long thin spurs of the flowers resemble the long legs of that mosquito.
They grow in eastern North America (one species), in Asia, from the Himalayas to Japan. The genus contains 4 species.
Flowers on thin pedicels, green with a purple tinge. Sepals and petals reflexed, more or less alike, narrow, 0.6- 0.8 cm long. The lip is shorter than or equal to the petals, three-lobed, with a narrow, elongated middle lobe expanded at the tip; lateral lobes short, triangular. The spur is very thin, much longer than the flower, horizontal. The column is narrow, straight, shorter than the petals. The rostellum is finely pubescent. Capsule elliptical, six-ribbed. Flowers in the second half of summer.
