Family Acanthaceae. Native to the tropical forests of the Americas, Asia, Africa, and the island of Madagascar. About 200 species of Thunbergia occur in nature. It is one of the fastest-growing houseplants, usually grown as an annual. Excellent for balcony greening.
Thunbergia erecta - Thunbergia eracta - a shrub about 1 m tall, with a slightly ribbed stem. Leaves opposite, up to 6 cm long, ovate or broadly lanceolate, glabrous. Flowers up to 4 cm in diameter, solitary, axillary. The corolla limb is five-lobed, with a bright violet limb; the tube is yellow inside and white outside.
Thunbergia fragrans - Thunbergia fragrans - a twining vine with a ribbed, branching stem with slight pubescence. Leaves opposite, up to 7 cm long, triangular or arrow-shaped, dark green above and lighter beneath. Flowers up to 5 cm in diameter, solitary, axillary. The corolla limb white, five-lobed.
