Family Cupressaceae. Naturally occurs in the eastern regions of North America. A tree 12-20 m tall, less often a shrub.

The crown is compact, pyramidal when young, ovoid at maturity, often drooping to the ground. Bark on young plants smooth, reddish-brown, later gray-brown, peeling off in longitudinal strips. Foliage scaly, glossy green, brownish-green in winter, small (0.2-0.4 cm), tightly appressed to the shoot, functions for 3 years and falls off together with small twigs (branch shedding). Cones small (0.8-1 cm), made up of 3-5 pairs of thin scales, ripen in autumn in the year of flowering. Highly polymorphic (variety of forms).
