Strelitzia
Strelitzia
Family Strelitziaceae. Native to southern Africa. In cultivation the species Strelitzia reginae is widespread. A beautiful rhizomatous plant with flowers on a long scape. The plant reaches on average 1.2 - 1.3 m in height.
The flower of Strelitzia, in shape and appearance, resembles the head of some tropical bird. The flowers are large — up to 15 cm in diameter; the outer perianth segments are orange, the inner ones dark blue. The leaves are dark green, glabrous, leathery, oval up to 40 cm long, on long petioles up to 50-60 cm long. Strelitzia blooms in spring; the flowers last a long time, for several weeks, so Strelitzia flowers are often used in bouquets and arrangements.
Temperature: Strelitzia prefers moderate or cool winter conditions around 14-15 °C, minimum 12 °C.
Light: Bright illumination, including some direct sunlight in the morning or evening. Shading will be necessary if the plant stands on a south or southwest window. An east-facing window is preferable.
Watering: Generous from spring to autumn; in winter moderate — about once every 10-14 days; in any case the soil should not dry out completely.
Fertilizer: From March to August apply feedings every 2 weeks with special liquid fertilizers for flowering houseplants, at the doses recommended in the instructions. You can also water with organic fertilizers — diluted manure slurry.
Air humidity: From time to time wipe Strelitzia leaves with a sponge. It is desirable to mist them periodically.
