Feather grass
STIPA
Family Poaceae. Natural range: steppes and rocky slopes throughout Eurasia.
The plant is 30-80 cm tall, leaves usually twisted lengthwise, 0.6-1.0 mm wide. The upper leaf clasps the narrow, compressed inflorescence, 10-15 cm long. Awns 12-18 cm, hair-like, sharply rough. Requires sunny, dry locations. Develops well on calcareous soil. Blue-green leaves and white inflorescences are especially attractive in mass plantings. Flowers, as with all feather grasses, in the 2nd-3rd year. Division is possible only for very old clumps.
