Stapelia

Stapelia

Back to catalogue
Family Asclepiadaceae. Native to Africa. About 70 species occur in the wild. This fairly common succulent is undemanding and easy to propagate.

All Stapelia are herbaceous succulents. Their fleshy stems grow upwards. The stems are four-angled, with well-defined teeth along the ribs. Stems may be purely green or have a reddish tint, glabrous or pubescent. Open flowers are star-shaped and often hairy. In стапелии пестрой - stapelia variegata the flowers are variegated — on a pale yellow background there are dark spots. In стапелии де Смета - stapelia desmetianta the flowers are reddish-brown with dark rows of long fringes. There are species with bright red flowers.

Temperature: Moderate in summer; in winter it is best to keep Stapelia at 15-16°C. Winter minimum 12°C.

Light: Stapelia likes a bright location with some direct sunlight; on a south-facing windowsill shading may be necessary. In winter place it in the brightest spot with full sunlight, without shading.

Watering: Moderate in spring and summer; reduced from autumn, and in winter water sparingly.
