Family Rosaceae (Rosaceae). Occurs wild in the Far East, southern Sakhalin, and northern Japan.

Tree up to 7 m high, with a well-developed trunk covered with dark gray bark with large white lenticels. The crown is narrow in youth and becomes spreading with age. Leaves up to 14 cm long, obovate or elliptical, pointed at the apex, cordate at the base, margin densely and irregularly serrate.

Flowers up to 1 cm, in many-flowered racemes up to 15 cm long with 3–5 bracts at the base. Fruits are globose drupes, black, fleshy, twice as large as those of the common bird cherry.
