Family kremovykh. Grows on dry gravelly hills in thickets of shrubs or on heavy meadow soils and in pine forests in the lower montane belt of California, below 2800 meters.
Stem branching, 40-60 cm long, generally without bulblets at the base. Leaves narrowly linear, folded lengthwise; basal 15-24 cm, stem 5-8 cm long. Sepals green, long-pointed, 3-4.5 cm long. Petals purple-lilac, 3-6 cm long, sometimes with a reddish spot in the middle; their lower third is covered with long tangled purple hairs. Glandular pit with short sticky hairs. Anthers lilac or blue, narrowly linear-lanceolate, equal in length to the expanded filaments. Capsule linear, three-angled, tapered toward the end, 2-6 cm long. Successfully cultivated in England.
