Spathiphyllum
Spatiphyllum
Family Araceae. Native to South America, East Asia, Polynesia. If this herbaceous plant is given a suitable location, it can bloom practically all year. In addition, Spathiphyllum begins flowering at an early age — already after 6–7 months. The flowers last a long time — more than a month.
Spatiphyllum floribundum - usually has an underground creeping stem; leaves up to 20 cm long and about 6 cm wide, bright green, oblong-lanceolate in shape, pointed at the tip. Flower stalks about 25 cm long; the inflorescence (spadix) with a pure white, slightly concave spathe. Flowers all year round.
Spatiphyllum blandum - similar to the previous species, but has larger leaves — about 10 cm wide and about 25 cm long; the flower spathe is light green. Flowers all year round.
Spatiphyllum wallisii - a much smaller plant; its leaves are about 5 cm wide and 15–20 cm long, with clearly visible impressed veins. The spathe of the spadix is small — up to 4 cm long — and is initially white, then gradually turns green. Flowers from spring to autumn.
Temperature: Develops well only in warmth, not below 18°C; the optimal temperature is 22–23°C. Does not tolerate drafts.
Lighting: In summer provide shading from direct sunlight, i.e. a bright location with light partial shade. In winter a good illumination is necessary.
Watering: Abundant from spring to autumn, more moderate in winter, but the soil should never dry out completely. Spatiphyllum does not tolerate waterlogged roots.
Fertilizer: From March to September feed weekly with a special fertilizer for houseplants that does not contain lime, for example "Azalea", "Flower" and similar. If Spatiphyllum blooms in winter, feed with the same fertilizers every 3–4 weeks.
Air humidity: Prefers very humid air; regular misting and washing of the leaves is required. Before misting, cover the flowers and buds.
Repotting: Spatiphyllum is repotted annually in spring into a slightly larger pot. Soil: 2 parts garden loam, 1 part leaf mold, 1 part peat, 1 part humus soil and 1 part sand. It is good to add a little charcoal and crushed brick to the soil. Good drainage is essential.
