Sparmannia
Sparmannia
Family: linden. Native range - South Africa. Sparmannia is also called the indoor linden, due to the similar shape of its leaves.
African sparmannia - Sparmannia africana - a fast-growing plant with woody, erect stems covered with large light-green pubescent heart-shaped leaves up to 20 cm long. Sparmannia blooms at about 3 years of age with very beautiful flowers which, like those of the linden, are borne in clusters on long flower stalks. The flowers themselves are white, with a center of numerous fluffy bright-yellow stamens. Flowering lasts fairly long; spent flower stalks are removed.
Temperature: Sparmannia grows well in moderate and warm conditions, but preferably not above 23 °C. Winter minimum 10 °C.
Lighting: Sparmannia prefers very good lighting both in summer and winter; shading may be needed only in summer if the plant receives direct midday sun.
Watering: Abundant in spring and summer, as Sparmannia transpires a large amount of water through its large leaves; in summer it may need watering every day. In winter watering is more moderate. The soil should remain slightly moist at all times.
