Family Bur-reeds. Siberia, Europe, the Far East, North America. In lakes, along river shores, in water bodies among marshes and tundras.
Perennial herbs with floating and erect stems. Leaves longer than the stem, narrow, with a faint midrib, somewhat thick, plano-convex, not translucent, rounded at the tip. Inflorescences simple, short. Female heads unevenly spaced, the upper ones clustered, while the lower one is often on a long stalk, set apart. The male head closely adjoins the upper female. Anthers spherical. Fruit on a short stalk, broadly ovoid, with a barely noticeable wart-like beak.
