Family: Polemoniaceae. Native to Mexico.

A perennial plant, grown as an annual. Produces numerous shoots up to 4 m long. Leaves pinnate, somewhat wrinkled, ending in a branched tendril by which the plant attaches itself to a support. Flowers light- or dark-violet, bell-shaped, 6-8 cm in diameter, with long stamens and pistil protruding beyond the flower. Blooms from July until the first frosts. Seeds ripen very rarely. In cultivation since 1787.
