Saxifrage

Saxifraga

Back to catalogue
Family Saxifragaceae. Widespread in East Asia in high mountain areas. Saxifrage grows between stones, in rock crevices. A fairly well-known and undemanding plant, which is grown as an ampelous (hanging) plant.

Stoloniferous saxifrage - Saxifraga stolonifera - a herbaceous plant with leaves gathered in a basal rosette. Leaves are rounded, about 5-7 cm in diameter, with a toothed margin, pubescent on both sides.

Leaf color is dark green, with light stripes along the veins; the underside of the leaf is lighter with specks of reddish dots. The saxifrage forms long stolon-like runners, at the ends of which daughter rosettes are formed. It produces a panicle of small inconspicuous white-pink flowers. Blooms in spring at 2-3 years of age.

Temperature: Cool in summer, preferably not above 20°C. In winter keep in a cool place at about 10-12°C. Winter minimum 6°C.

Light: Saxifrage is quite light-loving, although many consider it shade-tolerant; nevertheless, choose a bright location for it, with protection from direct sunlight in summer.

Watering: Abundant from spring to autumn — the soil should remain moist at all times; in winter watering is moderate or limited depending on the temperature of the environment.

Fertilizer: From March to September feed with a fertilizer for indoor ornamental foliage plants every two weeks.
