Kuril Sasa

Family: bamboo. Native to the Far East, Japan, and China. One of the few bamboo species.

Depending on the variety, plant height ranges from 25 cm to 2.5 m. Stems up to 6 mm thick; leaves about 13 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, ovate-acuminate. Like other bamboos, it flowers only once and dies after flowering. In our conditions it grows slowly; only dwarf forms that overwinter under snow establish successfully. Used for plantings in Japanese gardens and as a groundcover.
