Sansevieria
Sansevieria
Family Liliaceae. Native to tropical Asia and Africa. Sansevieria is a beautiful, undemanding houseplant suitable for growing both as a single specimen and in compositions. A major advantage of Sansevieria among other houseplants is that it tolerates dry air.
The species most common in cultivation - Sansevieria trifasciata - has long succulent leaves with distinct dark transverse bands; the cultivar S. trifasciata 'Laurentii' has a yellow-golden margin along the leaf edge and this species can grow to 1 meter and more; Sansevieria hahnii - a dwarf plant with broader but shorter leaves; the cultivar Sansevieria 'Golden Hahnii' has a wide white-yellow stripe along the leaf edge, the rosette reaches about 25-30 cm.
Temperature: Moderate, cooler in winter 14-16 °C, minimum 10 °C.
Light: Light-loving; prefers bright, diffused light, tolerates light shade; variegated varieties require more light and tolerate direct sunlight well. In winter a bright room is necessary. East and west windows are well suited. On a south window shading may be needed in summer only during the hottest hours. Sansevieria will grow on a north-facing window, but to bring out the full variegation and brightness of the shades it needs sun.
Watering: Moderate from spring to autumn – the soil should be allowed to dry out between waterings. In winter watering is limited to about once every two to three weeks depending on temperature. When watering, especially in winter, do not allow water to get into the center of the rosette – this can cause rotting.
During the growth period apply liquid fertilizer for houseplants; feed no more than once a month.
