Family Acanthaceae. Native to South America. About 60 species occur in the wild. Sanchezia is a close relative of Aphelandra, with which it has a noticeable external similarity in leaf coloration.

Sanchezia nobilis - a large plant with an erect quadrangular stem. Leaves about 25 cm long, oblong-lanceolate with a pointed apex. Leaf surface green with yellow veins. Inflorescences spike-like, terminal. Flowers yellow with red bracts. Fruit a capsule.



Temperature: The plant is heat-loving. In summer normal room temperature, in winter not below 15 °C.

Light: Sanchezia prefers bright light, but in summer needs shading from direct sunlight.

Watering: Abundant during the summer period; the soil should not dry out. In winter watering is more moderate and cautious.

Fertilizer: In spring and summer Sanchezia is fed every 2-3 weeks. Use a balanced mineral fertilizer for houseplants.

Humidity: Frequent spraying and gentle washing of the leaves. Preferably the humidity should be around 80-90%.

Repotting: Soil for Sanchezia should be nutritious. Repot annually in spring; mature plants every two years. Soil: 1 part leaf soil, 1 part humus soil, 1 part clayey topsoil, 1 part peat and 0.5 part sand.
