Family Poaceae. Found in wet places, usually near the seashore, in the tropics and subtropics of the Americas. Leaf blades linear, 0.3-0.8 cm wide, flat, with nearly parallel margins, blunt or even slightly emarginate at the apex.

Inflorescences solitary, one-sided spike-like branches 4-10 cm long, situated at the tips of stems and their lateral branches; the branch axis is strongly thickened and breaks up into joints at fruiting; in the axis depressions, very short (up to 1 cm long) spike-like second-order branches are arranged in two rows, bearing only 1-3 fully developed spikelets; spikelets 0.4-0.5 cm long, with 2 florets, of which the upper is bisexual and the lower is staminate or reduced.
