Back to catalogue

Peach Fleming Fury (Рrunus persica Flamin' Fury) – a large-fruited, cold-hardy peach cultivar of mid-late ripening. Obtained in Michigan (USA). Breeder Paul Friday. The series consists of 23 cultivars. This cultivar was tested for winter hardiness in 1999 in southwest Michigan and for late-spring freezes in 2002. The series is recognized as the largest peach in the world and was entered in the «Guinness Book of Records».

It is a vigorously growing tree with a wide, spreading crown. Blooms late.

Fruits are very large, weighing 270-300 (500) g, orange with a predominant red blush. Flesh is deep yellow, juicy, tasty, buttery, not fibrous. Stone separates well. Ripening time - mid-September. Fruit transportability is high, up to 5-6 days. Possesses excellent taste and market qualities.

Hardiness zone: 5-8 (-23°С).

Location: requires sunny and wind-protected sites. During fruit set moderate watering is recommended. Prefers loamy or sandy-loam soils. Drought tolerance is low, heat tolerance below average.

Planting and care: planting is recommended in spring, but can be done in autumn (in that case mulching of the trunk circle and mounding to a height of 20-30 cm is necessary). The planting hole should be at least 0.7x0.7 m, spacing 4x4 m. Mix 10 kg of well-rotted manure and 150 g of superphosphate with soil and backfill the seedling with the root system spread out. The trunk circle should be compacted to the edges, well watered (4-5 buckets) and mulched with a layer of compost to a height of 8-10 cm.

Pruning: needs moderate watering and formative pruning. For improved yields use the improved open-center (vase) pruning method. After planting the seedling remove all lateral branches. Leave 3-4 scaffold branches spaced 10-20 cm apart. Cut the leader at the base of the upper lateral branch. In the second year shorten first-order branches if they are longer than 50 cm or if they change direction of growth. In subsequent years pruning should be directed toward fruiting. Rejuvenation pruning is carried out from bud swell to the beginning of flowering. In case of frost damage prune after water sprouts (suckers) appear on trunks and branches. The cultivar requires crop load regulation.

Diseases and pests: resistance to diseases is high.

Uses: Promising for commercial production. Undemanding in cultivation.
