Deciduous trees
Willow oak
Quercus phellos L.
Family Fagaceae. Native to eastern North America.
A handsome deciduous tree up to 20 m tall, with a slender trunk and a broadly rounded (pyramidal when young) crown. It is notable for its distinctive glossy green leaves resembling willow leaves (up to 12 cm long and 2 cm wide). This resemblance is even more pronounced in young leaves, which are densely hairy beneath. In autumn the leaves turn a dull yellow color.
Fast-growing, light-loving, undemanding as to soil, tolerates temperature drops down to -23 °C. Used in solitary and group plantings. In cultivation since 1680.
