Family Fagaceae. Occurs wild in the central and southern parts of the Far East, in Eastern Siberia, Eastern Asia. Present in many reserves of the Far East. Forms pure oak groves and grows as a component with other deciduous species at altitudes up to 700 m above sea level. A light-loving xeromesophyte.
Beautiful tree 20-30 m tall, with a spherical crown and a smooth gray trunk. Shoots glabrous. Leaves thick, leathery, on short petioles, obovate or oblong, up to 20 cm long, with blunt, short lobes; dark green above, paler beneath; borne in clusters at the ends of branches. In autumn the leaves turn bright yellow-brown tones. Some dried leaves remain on the tree until spring.
Grows slowly, moderately light-demanding, fairly frost-hardy, sometimes suffers from late spring frosts.
