Family: Fagaceae. Occurs wild in Armenia, in the Caucasus and northern Iran. Listed in the Red Book of the USSR. Protected in the Girkansky Reserve. Forms pure stands or forests mixed with other deciduous species on ridge crests. A light-demanding mesoxerophyte.
A beautiful up to 30 m tall tree with a slender trunk, the bark of which remains smooth for a long time, with a broad pyramidal crown and large leaves resembling the leaves of the horse chestnut, up to 18 cm long, with large, sharp, triangular teeth. The upper surface of the leaves is matte, dark green, almost glabrous; beneath they are thinly pubescent, grayish-white. Acorns up to 3 cm, enclosed by the cupule to one-third.
Grows relatively fast, is moderately frost-hardy, and insufficiently drought-resistant. Good for alleys, group and solitary plantings in parks and forest parks. In cultivation since 1830.
