Fruit trees
Pear
Pyrus L.
Family Rosaceae. The pear belongs to the botanical genus Pirus. About 60 species grow in the wild, of which only about 18 occur in the temperate zone.
These are usually trees, sometimes not tall, often thorny. Leaves are simple, flowers white, in corymb-like inflorescences. The fruit is false (pear), usually with stone cells in the flesh, which distinguishes them from apple fruits. Most pear species grow in mountainous areas.
In biochemical composition, pear fruits are close to apples but seem much sweeter.
