Back to catalogue

Synonyms: Benita Rafzas

Derived from: European pear (P. communis) and Asian pear (P. pyrifolia).

Pear 'Benita' – a new Italian, high-yielding summer cultivar, represents something between the Asian Nashi pear and the European pear. The tree is vigorous, reaching 6 m in height and 4–6 m in width. Leaves are large, leathery, dark green.

It blooms with small white flowers grouped in umbel-like inflorescences, in late April – early May. Pollination type – cross-pollinated.

Fruits are oval-ovoid in shape, 65-75 mm in diameter. Skin is firm, yellow, with a golden-reddish tint. Flesh is juicy, sweet, of excellent dessert flavor. Fruits ripen in mid-August. They can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 months without losing their taste or attractive appearance.

Hardiness zone 6a.

Location: Not demanding regarding soil, but grows better on light, well-drained soils. The plant is drought-tolerant. Prefers full sun or partial shade. For good pollination, another plant of a different cultivar should be planted on the same site.

Care: requires watering in mid-summer. In spring, nitrogen fertilization is necessary.

Pruning: the same as for the common pear.

Diseases and pests: high resistance to most diseases.

Use: The fruits have an excellent dessert flavor and good transportability. They are eaten fresh and are also used for making desserts.
