Yablunivska Pear
Pyrus communis
Pear Yablunivska (Pyrus communis) – a winter cultivar of the common pear. Ukrainian breeding, developed at the Transnistrian experimental station by crossing the cultivars Abat Fetel and Dekanka du Komis, breeders - V. I. Saiko, L. F. Satina.
It is a vigorous, high-yielding tree with a broad-pyramidal, compact crown.
Fruits pear-shaped to broadly pyriform with a weakly expressed neck, weighing 170-190 g (on quince rootstock 200-250 g). At picking maturity the skin is greenish-yellow; upon ripening it becomes light yellow with a faint blush or slight russeting. Flesh creamy or white, medium juicy, buttery, without grittiness, sweet-and-sour. Flavor quality is high, tasting score 8.5 points. Picking maturity occurs at the end of September, consumer maturity — in December. Begins bearing early: on seedling rootstock in the 4th-5th year after planting, on quince rootstock – in the 4th year.
Pollinator cultivars: Striyska, Malevchanka, Kucheryanka, Conference.
Hardiness zone: 4 (-28°C).

Site: demanding of environmental conditions. Less winter-hardy and more heat-loving than apple. Poorly tolerant of early autumn frosts, alternating thaws and frosts, and spring frosts (buds are killed at -4 °C). Prefers loose, moist soil with a small amount of clay. Prefers sunny but not scorching, wind-protected locations.
Planting: plant seedlings preferably in spring, but autumn planting is also possible. Pear seedlings generally have a poorly developed root system, so for the first 2 years the pear practically does not grow. Soil from the planting hole should be mixed with organic and mineral-potassium fertilizers. Fill the mixture to the edge of the hole. The root collar should be left 3 cm above ground level.
Propagation: propagated by grafting onto quince or wild pear.
Diseases and pests: resistance to scab and bacterial leaf scorch is high.
Use: fruits are consumed fresh. Popular due to high and stable yields, disease resistance, winter hardiness, high taste and commercial qualities of the fruits, and good transportability.
