Appearance: a small ornamental tree, 5–12 m tall and 5–8 m wide, crown shape initially conical, then ovoid, crown dense, slow-growing.

Flowers: in rounded racemose inflorescences, flowers small, white, during or after leaf emergence, blooms on last year’s shoots.

Fruits: small, round, black.

Leaves: broadly elliptic, green, in autumn – reddish-yellow.

Trunk: ornamental, bark reddish or yellow-brown, peels in thin transverse strips, very attractive in winter.

Requirements: sun/partial shade, prefers cool, moist sites, sensitive to high temperatures, very winter-hardy.

Soils: acidic or neutral, well-drained, sandy or loamy substrates, does not grow on heavy soils.
