Family Rosaceae . Native range - the Himalayas, Nepal.

A perennial plant up to 60 cm tall, with erect, branched, pubescent stems. Leaves trifoliate, serrated at the margin, light green above and white-felted beneath; the lower ones are petiolate, the upper ones sessile. Flowers glossy red up to 5 cm in diameter, borne in corymbose or paniculate inflorescences. Flowers from June for 50 days. Fruiting. In cultivation since 1822. Hardy to -29°C.

Has several hybrid forms, often grouped under the name cinquefoil hybrid with larger, double and almost black flowers. The cultivar 'Gibson Scarlet' ('Gibson Scarlet') has become widespread - flowers scarlet-red, glossy; blooms in June-July.
