Family Rosaceae. Native range - the Caucasus, Central Europe, the Balkans.
Perennial plant 8–25 cm high, entirely covered with appressed, silky hairs. Basal leaves compound, palmately lobed with dark-brown stipules. Flowers white, up to 3 cm in diameter, on long pedicels, grouped in fives into loose, umbel-like inflorescences. Blooms from May to August. In cultivation since 1789.
Undemanding, but does not tolerate waterlogging or scorching sun. Preferably grown in partial shade in moderately fertile, loose soil. Hardy, but a preventive dry cover is desirable.
