Appearance: a slender, large tree (10) 20-25 m tall, 8-10 m wide, crown conical or ovoid, upright shoots, in old age the crown is lacy and asymmetrical, initially fast-growing, 60-80 cm per year.
Flowers: dioecious; yellow-green catkins, produced before leaf emergence.
Fruits: seeds with white fluff.
Leaves: heart-shaped, pointed or acute-ovate, firm, glossy, dark green, whitish beneath.
Root system: shallow.
Requirements: sun; prefers cool, moist sites; cold-hardy.
Soils: fresh or moist, neutral or alkaline, any fertile substrate.
