Appearance: a vigorous tree with a rounded, broad crown, 20-35m in height, 15-20m in width, usually with a short trunk, branches spread diagonally, lower shoots horizontal or pendulous, fast-growing, 40-60 (120)cm per year, very decorative, cream-white in color.
Flowers: dioecious, yellow-green catkins, before leaf emergence.
Leaves: on young shoots resembling maple leaves, at budburst with white pubescence, later dark green above, white beneath, in autumn pale yellow.
Root system: shallow, very wide, deeper on dry soils, forms suckers, can grow into pipes, tolerates temporary flooding.
Requirements: sun/partial shade, tolerates high temperatures, prefers warmth, winter-hardy, tolerant of urban conditions, wind-resistant in the first decades of life, later becomes less wind-firm.
Soils: fresh or moist, avoid stagnant waterlogging, grows on any fertile substrates.
