Pisonia
Pisonia
Family Nyctaginaceae. Native to Central America, Australia and New Zealand. About 50 species occur naturally.
In cultivation the Pisonia umbellifera is widespread. It is an evergreen tree that in the wild reaches 5 m in height, with strongly branching shoots. Leaves are opposite, oblong, smooth, with a wavy margin, about 20–25 cm long, green. More often one can find the variegated cultivar Pisonia umbellifera variegata — with broad white or yellowish irregular spots from the leaf edge.
Temperature: Grows well in warm rooms at 18–20°C, preferably not above 21°C, and in winter around 16–17°C, not below 12°C.
Light: Bright, diffused light; shading from direct sunlight in summer is necessary.
Watering: Should be regular, moderate in spring and summer, infrequent in winter when the soil has sufficiently dried. The soil should not dry out completely or be too wet. Use soft, warm water for watering.
Fertilizer: During the active growth period from March to August, every two weeks with a liquid fertilizer for houseplants.
Air humidity: Pisonia is not as demanding about air humidity as, for example, Marantaceae, but responds well to occasional spraying with warm water.
