Family Piperaceae. Native to South America and Mexico. This extensive genus includes about 1000 species in nature. Among the peperomias cultivated as houseplants there are small small-leaved species, as well as large potted specimens, trailing forms or bushy ones.

Saffron pepper - Piper crocatum - an evergreen vine forming aerial roots that cling to supports. Its leaves are oblong-ovate, pointed at the tip, up to 10 cm long. The leaf surface is dark green with whitish spots along the veins; the underside is purple-red. The flowers are small, gathered in axillary spike-like inflorescences, and are not of ornamental value.

Decorated pepper - Piper ornatum - a vine similar to the previous species. Leaves alternate, cordate in shape, pointed at the tip, up to 10 cm long. The leaf surface is rugose and dark green with whitish spots along the veins; the underside is light green with reddish speckles. The flowers are small, gathered in axillary spike-like inflorescences.



Temperature: Moderate in summer, preferably not above 22°C. Cool in winter - around 16-18°C, but not below 15°C.

Light: Bright, diffused light or light partial shade.

Watering: Abundant in summer - the soil should remain evenly moist, and moderate in winter.

Fertilizer: From April to August feed with liquid fertilizers for ornamental foliage plants every two weeks.
