Weymouth pine 'Nana'

Pinus strobus Nana

Back to catalogue

Weymouth pine 'Nana' (Pínus strobus Nana) - a variable garden form of Weymouth pine. It is a small tree or shrub, 1.5-2.5 m in height, crown 2.5-3 m in diameter. Slow-growing. The main shoots are thin and short, heavily branched, spreading evenly. The lower branches emerge from the trunk at a right angle and grow horizontally, the upper ones – are positioned at an acute angle and directed outward and upward. The crown is regular, with clear contours, symmetrical, rounded or broadly pyramidal, with a slightly rounded top. Bark smooth.

Needles long (8-12 cm), thin, growing radially on the shoots, dense green in color with a bluish tint. Young needles are bright green, lie close to the shoot and stand out sharply against the older ones. Hardiness zone 3-9.

Location: prefers sunny and open sites, but can also grow in shade (shoots do not stretch much and the crown remains dense). Prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Does not tolerate waterlogging. Sensitive to air pollution.

Uses: Used in group and solitary plantings, for dressing forest edges, slopes, retaining walls, Japanese, heather, rock gardens and alpine gardens.
