Family Rosaceae. Name: from the Greek 'physo' - bladder, 'carpos' - fruit.

Description: contains 14 species distributed in North America and East Asia.

Ornamental, deciduous shrubs, undemanding in soil requirements, poorly tolerant of excessive moisture and especially waterlogging. Shade-tolerant, drought- and tolerant of air pollution. Propagated by seed, cuttings, division of the shrub. Sowing of seeds is carried out in autumn after collection or in spring after one month of stratification. Used in single and group plantings, as an understorey in thinned stands, along roads and railway lines, for tall hedges.
