Physalis Alkekengi
Family: Solanaceae Common names: bladder cherry, Jewish cherry. Pharmacopoeial name: fruits of physalis - Alkekengi fructus (formerly: Fructus Alkekengi).
Botanical description. A herbaceous plant about 0.5 m high, usually with a branched stem and ovate leaves. From the greenish-white flowers develop fleshy berries enclosed in a shiny red calyx shaped like a lantern. It grows in southern Europe, in America and Asia. In our region it occurs as a weed in shrubs, vineyards, in fields, and is also cultivated in gardens as an ornamental.
