Phragmites australis
Family: Poaceae. Perennial plant 1-4 m tall, with long and thick, creeping rhizomes. Forms stands in wet places and along the banks of water bodies. Stems erect, with numerous nodes.
The thickness of the hollow stem can reach two centimeters. The straight stem becomes almost woody after flowering. Leaves of the reed are grayish-green, rigid, elongated, and broad. The inflorescence is a large panicle 8-40 cm long, dense, with many separate small spikelets. Spikelets are 0.6-1.7 cm long; they are brownish-purple or yellowish, with long hairs. The reed is pollinated by wind. Flowers in July-August. There are cultivars, for example, 'Variegata'.

Location: grows on the banks of rivers, lakes, ponds, in marshes and wet meadows.
Use: in solitary plantings in wet places and in water bodies. Inflorescences look beautiful in dried bouquets.
