Phoenix

Back to catalogue
Family Arecaceae. Native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Africa, and the Canary Islands. The genus includes about 17 species, but three species are commonly grown as houseplants:

Canary Island date palm - Phoenix canariensis - trunk reaches a height of up to 10-15 m, fronds pinnate, 3-5 m long, with narrow glaucous-green leaflets. Petioles are covered with strong spines. Indoors it will eventually reach the ceiling.

Date palm - Phoenix dactylifera - trunk reaches 15-30 m in height; the trunk becomes bare with age. Fronds pinnate, 2-6 m long, leaves recurved and green. Indoors it will eventually reach the ceiling.

Pygmy date palm - Phoenix roebelenii - this species is most suitable for growing indoors; it has one or several trunks up to 1.5-2 m high, a dense crown, and dark green, arching leaves. This species requires a higher temperature and high air humidity.

Temperature: Moderate. Winter temperature for the Canary Island and the date palm: 8-16°C; for the Pygmy date palm: 15-20°C.

Light: A very bright location; direct sun is beneficial. For even crown development, rotate the palm periodically so different sides face the light — the tip of the newest leaf should be directed into the room rather than toward the window. In summer, when possible, move the palm outdoors to the garden in a spot sheltered from the wind.
