Family Lamiaceae. Name: from Greek phlos - fire. Due to its dense felt-like indumentum the plant was historically used to make wicks.
Description: perennial herbaceous or subshrub plants of the family Lamiaceae (Lamiaceae). Members of this genus occur in Southern Europe and Asia Minor. Zopniks are characterized by leafy stems 20-120 cm tall forming a dense mat, large, acutely pointed-cordate, matte leaves of green color with an ochre tint and flowers arranged in inflorescences. Plants of this genus are used in various flower beds; they also look good in group plantings.
Location: prefers sunny spots, grows well in a warm or hot location.
Soil: moderately dry, fresh. All types of garden soils are suitable.
Care: in spring cut back the stems. Thin out overly dense "carpets" with a spade.
Propagation: by division, seeds.
Uses: in steppe and rock gardens, on sunny slopes, and in flower beds on gravelly soil.
