Philodendron

Back to catalogue
Family Araceae. Native to the tropical forests of South America. Among the members of this genus there are tall tree-like plants and lianas. Aerial roots form in the leaf axils of all philodendron species. In cultivation, trailing species are the most common.

Philodendrons grow very well when tied to a support, for which a moss pole is ideal. Aerial roots are not removed but are tied or guided to the support. When purchasing large philodendron species, consider that they will need space indoors. With insufficient space, pinnate leaves are often damaged or torn. When placed close to window glass, if the plant stands in a hallway or on a stair landing, scars or spots from frost on the glass or sunburns may remain.

Филодендрон лазящий - Philodendron scandens - is a trailing plant well suited for growing in hanging baskets. Leaves are small, leathery, heart-shaped — 8–15 cm long and 5–10 cm wide. There are several varieties. One of the most shade-tolerant species. In addition, this is the smallest-leaved philodendron and perhaps the most undemanding.

Филодендрон домашний - Philodendron domesticum - is a liana with glossy, arrow-shaped leaves up to 35–40 cm long, of a bright green, delicate color. It grows quickly and easily reaches the ceiling; it requires a support. Also encountered under another name - Филодендрон копьевидный - Philodendron hastatum.

Филодендрон дваждыперистонадрезанный - Philodendron bipennifolium - a tree-like plant with an erect stem. Leaves are large, up to 50–60 cm long, heart-shaped. It grows slowly upward but occupies a lot of space in width — almost half a room. Also encountered under another name - Филодендрон гитаровидный - Philodendron panduriforme.

Филодендрон черно-золотистый - Philodendron melanochrysum - a large vine with heart-shaped leaves up to 60 cm long. Leaves have a coppery sheen and white veins. It grows fairly slowly, but at home will reach the ceiling. The winter minimum for this species is 16-18 °C.
