Common bean

Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Back to catalogue

Family Leguminosae (Fabaceae). Pharmacopeial name: bean pods pericarp - Phaseoli pericarpium (formerly: Fructus Phaseoli sine semine).

Seeds and unripe beans are poisonous in raw form!

Used parts: bean pods.

Botanical description. Various cultivars of the common bean are grown in gardens and plantations for both vegetable production and for the pod valves used for medicinal purposes. It is not expedient to give a detailed description of the plant because different cultivars vary greatly in leaf shape, flower color, and in the length, width and shape of the fruits. Plant size also varies. For medicinal purposes, the pods of all cultivated bean varieties are suitable.

Collection and preparation. When the fruits are fully ripe and begin to split, it is time to harvest. The seeds are removed and later used for food, while the pod valves are dried in the sun and then used for medicinal purposes.
